Ingredients Needed

  • 4 ripe pears
  • 2 eating apples
  • 2 balls of stem ginger in syrup
  • 300g (10.6 oz) blackberries
  • 100g (3.5 oz) cold unsalted butter
  • 1 large orange
  • 100g (1 cup) porridge oats
  • 60g (1/4 cup) demerara sugar
  • 1 pinch of ground cinnamon
  • 100g (3.5 oz) cornflakes

How To Make Pear & Blackberry Crumble

  1. Prepare the Fruit: Cut the pears and apples into sixths, removing the core. Finely chop the stem ginger.
  2. Cook the Fruit: Remove the shelf from the air fryer. Place the pears, apples, blackberries, and ginger inside with a knob of butter, the orange zest and juice, and 2 tablespoons of stem ginger syrup. Mix and cook for 40 minutes at 180ºC (350ºF), or until the fruit has softened, stirring halfway through.
  3. Make the Crumble Topping: Meanwhile, place the oats in a bowl. Cube up and add the remaining butter, then rub together with your thumbs and fingertips. Add the sugar, and cinnamon, and scrunch in the cornflakes. Mix well.
  4. Assemble and Cook: Scatter the crumble mixture over the fruit and cook for another 10 minutes at 180ºC (350ºF) or until golden and bubbling.
  5. Serve: Dish up straight from the drawer, and serve with custard, crème fraîche, or ice cream.

Recipe Tips

  • Use ripe fruit: Make sure the pears and apples are ripe for the best flavor. If they’re too firm, they won’t soften enough during cooking.
  • Don’t overmix the crumble topping: When making the crumble, gently rub the butter into the oats. Overworking it can result in a tough topping instead of a light, crumbly texture.
  • Adjust the sweetness: Taste the fruit mixture before cooking. If you prefer a sweeter crumble, add more sugar or syrup.
  • Add extra crunch: For an added texture, sprinkle some chopped nuts like almonds or walnuts on top of the crumble before baking.
  • Serve warm: Crumble is best served warm for that delicious, gooey fruit filling and crispy topping. Make sure to let it cool for just a few minutes after baking!

How To Store And Reheat Leftovers?

  • Refrigerate: Let the leftover crumble cool to room temperature. Once cooled, cover and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze: You can freeze the crumble for up to 3 months. Let it cool completely, then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or foil and place it in an airtight container. To serve, thaw it in the fridge overnight before warming it.
  • Reheat: Preheat the air fryer to 180ºC (350ºF). Place the crumble in an air fryer-safe dish and heat for 8-10 minutes until it’s warmed through and the topping is slightly crisp.
