Jamie Oliver 5 Ingredients Croatian Mussels is made with garlic bread, mussels, flat-leaf parsley, cherry tomatoes, and white wine. This super-quick and easy mussel stew recipe creates a tasty seafood dinner that takes about 14 minutes to prepare and can serve up to 2 people.
This Croatian Mussels Recipe Is From 5 Ingredients Mediterranean Cookbook by Jamie Oliver.
Ingredients Needed:
- 50g (1.75 oz) garlic bread
- 600g (1.3 lbs) mussels, scrubbed and debearded
- 1 bunch of flat-leaf parsley (30g/1 oz), chopped
- 250g (9 oz) ripe mixed-colour cherry tomatoes, halved
- 150ml (5 oz) white wine
How To Make Croatian Mussels:
- Make the breadcrumbs: Whiz the garlic bread into fine crumbs and toast them in a large casserole pan over medium heat, stirring regularly until golden.
- Prepare the mussels: While the breadcrumbs toast, check the mussels. If any are open, tap them—discard any that don’t close.
- Cook the mussels: Remove most of the toasted breadcrumbs to a plate. Turn the heat to high, add the mussels, chopped parsley, tomatoes, wine, and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Stir well and cook for 2 minutes.
- Steam the mussels: Add 50ml (1.7 oz) of water to the pan, cover with a lid, and steam for 3 minutes until all mussels open. Discard any that remain closed.
- Serve: Plate the mussels, drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, and scatter the remaining crispy breadcrumbs over the top for a crunchy finish. Enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- Check the mussels: Make sure all the mussels are closed before cooking. If any are open and don’t close when tapped, discard them.
- Toast the breadcrumbs evenly: Stir the breadcrumbs constantly while toasting to prevent them from burning.
- Use fresh herbs: Fresh parsley adds a bright flavor that pairs well with the mussels.
- Don’t overcook the mussels: Mussels only need a few minutes to open and cook, so keep an eye on them.
- Serve the breadcrumbs separately: Toasted breadcrumbs add a crunchy texture when scattered over the mussels right before serving.
How To Store & Reheat Leftovers
Store any leftover mussels in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 day.
Mussels are best enjoyed fresh, but if you need to reheat them, place them in a pan over medium heat with a splash of water or wine. Heat gently until warmed through. Avoid overcooking, as mussels can become rubbery.
Note: It’s generally not recommended to freeze cooked mussels, as they can lose their texture and flavor.
