This easy and delicious Vegan Apple Crumble by Jamie Oliver is a comforting, sweet treat perfect for any occasion. Made with simple ingredients like apples, cinnamon, and ground almonds, it offers a warm, crunchy topping with a juicy, tender filling. Serve it with plant-based custard or ice cream for the ultimate dessert experience.
Ingredients Needed
- 1.5kg mixed apples (approx. 3.3 lbs, I like to use half Bramley)
- 200g golden caster sugar (1 cup)
- 1 lemon
- 100g unsalted vegan butter (cold, 7 tbsp)
- 100g plain flour (3/4 cup + 1 tbsp)
- 100g ground almonds (1 cup)
- A good pinch of ground cinnamon
How To Make Vegan Apple Crumble
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/gas 6.
- Prepare the apples: Peel and core the apples, then quarter and chop into 3cm (1.2-inch) chunks. Place them in a saucepan on medium heat with 100g (1/2 cup) of the sugar and a few fine gratings of lemon zest. Cover with the lid and cook for 5 minutes, or until the apples have softened. Remove from the heat and leave to cool a little.
- Make the crumble topping: Cube the vegan butter and place it in a mixing bowl with the flour. Rub together with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. Then scrunch in the ground almonds, cinnamon, and the remaining 100g (1/2 cup) of sugar for a bit of texture.
- Assemble the crumble: Transfer the apples to a 25cm x 30cm (10-inch x 12-inch) baking dish and sprinkle over the crumble topping.
- Bake: Place in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the topping is golden and the filling is bubbling.
- Serve: Deliciously served with your favorite plant-based vanilla custard, cream, or ice cream.

Recipe Tips
- Use a mix of apples: Combining tart apples like Bramley with sweeter ones will give the crumble a balanced flavor and texture.
- Don’t overcook the apples: Cook the apples just enough to soften them. If you cook them too long, they may turn mushy in the crumble.
- Chill the butter: For a crumblier topping, make sure the vegan butter is cold when you mix it with the flour.
- Scrunch the topping: When making the crumble topping, scrunch the mixture with your hands. This will create clumps that bake into a crispy, crunchy texture.
- Let it cool before serving: Let the crumble sit for a few minutes after baking to allow the filling to set and make it easier to serve.
How To Store Leftovers?
- Refrigerate: Let the leftover Vegan Apple Crumble cool to room temperature. Once cooled, cover it with plastic wrap or transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
- Freeze: After cooling, wrap the crumble tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil or place it in a freezer-safe container. It can be frozen for up to 3 months. To serve, thaw it in the fridge overnight before enjoying it.
