If you’re after a quick, chewy, and sweet snack, these Jamie Oliver 5 Ingredients Flapjacks are going to be your new favourite. Made with buttery oats, golden syrup, and a mix of dried fruit and nuts, they’re deliciously moreish and so easy to make. I whipped up a batch for some lunchbox snacks and ended up keeping a few for myself with a cuppa. (inspired by Jamie Oliver)
Ingredients Needed
- 100g (3.5 oz) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 100g (3.5 oz) mixed dried fruit & nuts
- 100g (3.5 oz) porridge oats
- 100g (3.5 oz) self-raising flour
- 100g (3.5 oz) golden syrup
How To Make Jamie Oliver 5 Ingredients Flapjacks
- Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 180ºC (350ºF/gas mark 4) and line a 20cm square baking tin with greaseproof paper. Rub it lightly with a little olive oil so the flapjacks don’t stick.
- Mix the Ingredients: In a food processor, pulse the butter, mixed dried fruit & nuts, oats, and self-raising flour until it starts to come together. Add the golden syrup and pulse again until fully combined and sticky.
- Bake the Flapjacks: Scoop the mixture into your prepared tin and press it down evenly with the back of a spoon. Make sure to get it right into the corners. Bake for 15–20 minutes or until lightly golden.
- Cool and Cut: Take the tin out of the oven and cut the flapjacks into 16 squares while they’re still warm. Let them cool in the tin for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Why I Love This Recipe
There’s something nostalgic and comforting about flapjacks. These come together in under half an hour and are just the right mix of chewy and crisp. I made a batch on a Sunday and they didn’t even last the week—everyone kept grabbing one as they passed the kitchen!
Recipe Tips
- Butter Should Be Soft: Soft butter blends better—don’t use it straight from the fridge.
- Chop Large Pieces: If your dried fruit or nuts are quite chunky, give them a quick chop first.
- Prep Your Tin Well: Lining and oiling the tin helps the flapjacks come out easily.
- Watch the Bake: Don’t let them overbake—take them out as soon as they’re golden.
- Cool Before Cutting: Let them cool fully to get neat squares that hold their shape.
How To Store This Jamie Oliver 5 Ingredients Flapjacks
- At Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Keep them in a cool spot away from sunlight.
- In the Fridge: If you want them to last longer, store them in the fridge for up to a week. Let them come to room temp before eating for the best texture.
- In the Freezer: You can freeze flapjacks for up to 3 months. Flash freeze them in a single layer, then transfer to a container or freezer bag. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
- Reheating: These are best enjoyed at room temperature but if you want a warm flapjack, give it a 10-second zap in the microwave.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- What Can I Use If I Don’t Have Self-raising Flour? Mix plain flour with baking powder—1.5 tsp of baking powder per 100g flour.
- Can I Use Honey Instead Of Golden Syrup? Yes, but it changes the flavour slightly. Still delicious though!
- How Do I Prevent The Flapjacks From Being Too Crumbly? Press the mixture down firmly in the tin and don’t overbake them.
- Can I Add Chocolate Chips? Absolutely—just fold them in before baking for a sweet twist.
- What If The Flapjacks Turn Out Too Dry? Make sure you’re using enough syrup and check your baking time. A few minutes too long can dry them out.
